Though the marks may be the same, the way they are used in both languages is slightly different!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commas<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The comma has similar functions both in English and Spanish punctuation: we use it to introduce pauses into long sentences, add explanatory clauses or phrases, and separate items on a list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are a couple of differences between the English and the Spanish comma that you should be aware of if you want your Spanish emails and essays to be spotless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. According to Spanish punctuation rules, commas shouldn\u2019t be used before conjunctions <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and) or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or) before the last item on a list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traje chocolatada, galletitas y torta.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (I brought chocolate milk, biscuits, and cake.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. If you are going to use quotation marks, the comma should follow the marks in Spanish, but precede them in English:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cQu\u00e9 hambre tengo\u201d, dijo Julia. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cI\u2019m so hungry,\u201d said Julia.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. I mean, on the one hand, you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have to write both a stop and a comma to make a semicolon. But more interestingly, the semicolon is precisely a hybrid between a period and a comma!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like in English, semicolons are used according to Spanish punctuation rules for two different things:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. When making a list of long items which include commas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tengo much\u00edsimos hobbies, pero la mayor\u00eda est\u00e1n relacionados con el arte; leer libros, sobre todo por la ma\u00f1ana; escribir canciones; y, siempre que puedo, ir al teatro con mi pareja.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (I have a lot of hobbies, most of them related to the arts; reading books, especially in the morning; writing songs; and going to the theatre with my partner.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. When we want to join two independent phrases which are thematically too close to be separated by a period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En primavera, generalmente viajo a Francia; en oto\u00f1o viajo a Suiza.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (In the spring, I normally travel to France; in autumn, I visit Switzerland.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Question Marks &amp; Exclamation Points<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Question and exclamation marks are used in Spanish for interrogative and exclamatory phrases, just like in English. No surprises there. However, there is one little thing that you have to remember about Spanish punctuation rules for questions and exclamations <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one is not enough! You need to use an inverted or opening mark at the beginning of every question or exclamatory remark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a1Qu\u00e9 lindo saco! \u00bfD\u00f3nde lo compraste?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (What a nice cardigan! Where did you buy it?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, you might be thinking: \u201cBut I\u2019ve seen lots of Spanish comments on YouTube where there are no opening marks at all!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, I see English comments on YouTube that mistake \u201ctheir\u201d for \u201cthey\u2019re\u201d Every single day. Does that make the phrase \u201cTheir so great!\u201d correct? They have guillemets (\u00ab \u00bb), quotation marks (\u201d \u201c), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single quotation marks (\u2018 \u2018).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, what kind of quotation marks you use is a matter of style. In recent years, however, Spanish speakers have started to use English quotation marks more and more often.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter which kind you use, it is crucial you remember what quotation marks are for:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Quoting what someone has said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cS\u00ed, lo mat\u00e9 yo\u201d, confes\u00f3 Ana.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cYes, it was me who killed him\u201d, confessed Ana.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Using a peculiar or uncommon term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Este saquito lo compr\u00e9 en una de esas \u00abboutiques\u00bb que hay en el pueblo. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(I bought this cardigan in one of those \u201cboutiques\u201d we have back at home.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.
