New Zealand and the French language have been associated for a very long time. For example, New Zealand’s diplomatic relations with France began in 1945 and have strengthened ever since, with both government’s cooperating on maritime surveillance, joint defence exercises, disaster relief and development and the integration of French Pacific territories. Today, more than 5,000 French speakers live in the country, and 15% of them are based in Wellington, according to the 2011 census. So, if you would like to discover how much you have in common with this community, take advantage of new professional opportunities in the city and even enjoy the annual French International Film Festival in Wellington on another level, learning French is a smart move. Contact us at Language Trainers and we will start designing the best language package for you!

Why Study French in Wellington

For Work: Study French in Wellington and increase your chances of being hired. France is New Zealand’s third-largest trading partner within the EU, so organisations are always on the lookout for fluent speakers who can help manage negotiations and build profitable partnerships. These French businesses also provide a significant source of investment into the country, particularly in the wine industry. Also, many French companies have set up or invested in operations in Wellington, with particular focus on technology (banking and healthcare software, telecommunications) and high-end food and beverages. For example, Le Marché Francais and the French Door Company are always looking for fluent speakers to communicate with their partners of French origin. So, if you are looking for a new job in these fields, start learning French today and boost your employability!

For Culture: There is a strong history of cultural, scientific, literary and academic exchange between France and New Zealand: wine and other imports to Wellington were recorded as far as 1892, and French is still being taught in schools. Also, there are many institutions around the city that organise concerts, exhibitions, shows, screenings, plays, conferences and festivals. For example, if you would like to attend French-style parties without leaving the city, you will be happy to know that, as of 2018, the Alliance Francaise in Wellington hosts just such an event where you can meet people, listen to French music, dance and speak French with other guests. You can also taste delicious wine, cheese, ham and bread, all which have been directly imported from France. Have a great time while using the foreign language skills you acquire with us at Language Trainers!

For Social: And if you would like to make new friends in Wellington by using the French skills you learn with us, that is also possible. For instance, you can join the InterNations space for French in Wellington, a group meant for expats living in the city and for anyone with an interest in this fascinating language and culture. They usually get together at bars and restaurants that serve traditional French dishes, like Cafe Breton on Brandon Street, where you can order chocolate éclair and impress both your new friends and the personnel with your skills! Another social option is the French Speakers Wellington Meetup. They welcome all ages and levels of proficiency, so feel free to join them and practise what you learn in your language course.
