For most communities from the Middle East, migration to Australia on a large scale has been a fairly recent phenomenon, influenced by contemporary upheavals which encouraged people to seek a more stable life elsewhere. According to the Australian census, the countries that represent the most significant sources of immigration are Lebanon, Egypt, Iran and Iraq. Today, more than 250,000 people of Arab origin live in Australia, and 800 of them reside in Adelaide, according to the 2013 census, shaping the cultural landscape of the city with their festivals and mosques. So, you can connect with these diverse communities and enjoy cultural events around Adelaide by speaking in Modern Standard Arabic. Contact us at Language Trainers and begin enjoying the benefits of a language spoken by over 220 million people worldwide.

Why Study Arabic in Adelaide

For Work and Studies: If you are looking to broaden your professional horizons and find a job which offers international opportunities, then learning Arabic will prove to be an asset. For starters, you can get in touch with the Australia Arab Chamber of Commerce, an institution whose mission it is to assist Australian companies exporting to or expanding into the Middle East, North Africa, and Arab companies looking to invest in Australia. This Chamber has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Canberra, and manages an extensive network of members and stakeholders and program of events to facilitate business networking.

However, you are not looking for a new job but would like to study at university instead, you can enrol in the Arabic Studies programme at the University of Adelaide. Lessons are developed and delivered by experienced educators and the content is geared towards practical use of the language. And while you don’t need to have previous knowledge of Arabic, you can advance in the course more easily if you have studied the language before; so, contact us to start your preparations early!

For Culture & Tourism: If you are more interested in getting to know the culture of Arabic-speaking countries, you can participate in the activities organised by the Muslim Women’s Association of South Australia, an institution founded in 1992 with the aim of promoting friendly relations and cultural exchange. Every month, this institution organises different online or in-person activities that go from sports events to festivals or get-togethers. Meanwhile, if you would like to know more about the Islamic religion, many of the mosques open their doors to non-Muslim Australians, allowing them to explore these houses of prayer. Most of their guided tours are delivered both in English and in Arabic, so make the most out of this experience by studying Arabic in advance!

In case you are learning Arabic to travel around the MENA region, you’ll be happy to know Emirates has flights from Adelaide to Saudi Arabia, where you can visit the amazing cities of Hegra, Umluj, or Rijal Almaa. Master the Arabic language and enhance your trips!

For Social and Food: Those who want to learn the language to connect with Arabic speakers in Adelaide should participate in the gatherings organised by the Arabic Language & Culture Association of SA Meetup. This exchange group aims to build bridges between Arabic-speaking communities and the Australian Community through the development of education projects that celebrate cultural diversity and enhance greater understanding and appreciation for Arabic language and cultures. This meet-up, then, aims to gather both Arabic native speakers and language learners who would like to share experiences speaking in Arabic!
