Auckland is a city rich in diverse cultures and friendly people who speak more than one language. Since the 2001 census, the number of multilingual speakers has increased by 25%, and one of the most popular languages spoken is French. According to the 2013 New Zealand census, there are more than 50,000 French speakers living in the country, and 25% of them live in Auckland. So, learning this fascinating language will not only allow you to interact with this growing community on another level but will also look great on your CV, opening up new professional opportunities. Why Study French in Auckland

For Work: Studying French in Auckland can be an asset, particularly if you are looking for a new job. Companies such as H&J Smith, Ballantynes and Union Square are looking for French speakers for positions such as chef, salesperson and counter manager, so a knowledge of the language will make you stand out when compared to monolingual candidates. If you would like to network with French entrepreneurs, it is a good idea to get in touch with the French New Zealand Business Council (FNZCCI) on Symonds Street, an institution that, since 1985, has been fostering business relations between France and the French Pacific Islands and New Zealand. The FNZCCI promotes networking between its members and guests by organising many events each year, such as Bastille Day and Beaujolais Nouveau, business breakfasts and networking functions. Take advantage of this opportunity and impress French businesspeople with the language skills you learn in your classes with us!

For Social: If you are not actively looking for a job but would like to socialise instead, you will find many groups for making new friends and to practise your French. Many people in Auckland have an interest in the French language and culture, and so come together often in a language meetup group, such as InterNations. This particular group has more than 1,600 members, so it is the best option for francophiles of all ages and levels to chat in French and meet new people with a similar passion for the language. And if you like traditional French food, you can take your new friends to restaurants like Le Bistro des Gourmets on Parnell Road to have a true French experience. You can order olives et chèvre frais aux piments d’Espelette or terrine de campagne maison using the pronunciation you acquire in your lessons with Language Trainers!

For Culture: Auckland is a city full of possibilities to experience French culture. Enhance your personal development and deepen your transformational journey through yoga in French, an activity organised by the Alliance Française. Or, if you are an avid reader, you will be happy to know you can join a book club organised by the same institution! They meet once a month at the Grey Lynn Community Centre on Richmond Road. The idea is that the club members put their language skills into practice while enjoying and sharing their views on French classical literature. And if you are more into art and history, the Auckland War Memorial Museum on Parnell St has exhibitions of French artefacts and works of art. The objects’ descriptions and audio guides are in French, so knowledge of the language will certainly come in handy to fully enjoy the experience!
