Why Study Italian in Wellington
For Work: With some of the most well-recognised, prestige brands in the world, Italy is the world’s eighth-biggest industrial economy, offering a huge amount of opportunities to New Zealand exporters. When it comes to Wellington in particular, the major exports include wool, hides and precious stones, dairy, wood and electrical machinery. So, workers in these industries who learn Italian will certainly broaden their professional horizons and find new employment opportunities around Wellington by being able to offer the somewhat rare skillset of aiding communication between businesses in the two countries. Also, if you are looking to connect with companies and entrepreneurs of Italian origin, you can contact the Italian Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand (Wellington Chapter), an organisation that works to stimulate, facilitate and foster economic and trade relations between Italy and New Zealand. Attend their networking events and impress the attendees with your Italian to start building good relations!
For Social: Those looking to make new friends who share a passion for the Italian language and culture will find many opportunities for doing so. For example, you can join the meet-up called The Italian Way, a language exchange group that welcomes Italian expats and learners, whether they speak fluently, are beginners or everything in between. The purpose of the group is for members to get together to speak about all things Italian at least once a month. The topic of conversation changes every time, so you won’t get bored and will learn new vocabulary every time. Take advantage of this opportunity to make new friends and put your new Italian skills to use! Also, the Club Garibaldi organises weekly events to play indoor bowls, cards, enjoy a drink and members’ company. Other social occasions during the year include the national day celebration, a senior members' lunch, a fund-raising dinner, a picnic and even a Christmas party. In Wellington, you will never run out of opportunities to speak Italian!
For Culture: Work and social opportunities aside, Wellington honours its Italian heritage all year long. For example, you can join the many activities organised by the Club Garibaldi, established in 1882 to foster and promote Italian heritage, the language and customs. The club operates from its own building on the corner of Tory and Vivian Streets in Wellington and holds an annual evening of Italian entertainment and, twice a year, hosts some of the country's leading singers in a live show. Come and sing to the beautiful Italian tunes using the pronunciation you learn with us at Language Trainers while enjoying delicious Mediterranean food. If you are more interested in art, you can attend a permanent exhibition at the New Zealand national museum, Te Papa, Qui Tutto Bene, which features the best works of Italian painters and sculptors. And those who enjoy parties and celebrations should not miss the annual Italian Festival, which has been running since 1995 and shows off the best of Italian entertainment, food and drink; in 2018, it attracted more than 15,000 visitors, so be sure to attend and have the time of your life!
