Canberra, Australia's capital and the country's largest inland city, is home to a population of 410,000 people; and more than 10,000 of them speak Japanese according to the 2011 census. Moreover, Japan is one of Australia's major trading partners, so learning Japanese will certainly be beneficial for your career in Canberra. In addition to broadening your professional horizons, taking Japanese classes will allow you to connect with the local Japanese community, study at university and even enjoy your holidays in Japan like never before. Start studying with us! As soon as you contact us, we will begin designing a language course suitable to your needs and schedule.
For Travel and Studies: Learning Japanese will allow you to enjoy your holidays in Japan on a different level. Sometimes, it is hard to get by in a city if you do not understand the local language, but this won’t be your case. If you are planning to travel to Japan, you will be glad to know that there are many direct flights to Tokyo. In only 12 hours, you will be in the fascinating Japanese capital, ordering food with the pronunciation you acquire with Language Trainers! And if you would like to study instead, the Bachelor of Asia-Pacific Studies at the Australian National University (ANU) is a great option. You will combine study at ANU with one year at a university in an Asian city, like Tokyo. Studying Japanese with us at Language Trainers, then, will be of crucial importance for you to get by in this fascinating country!
For Culture: Canberra offers a lot of options for those who would like to experience Japanese culture firsthand. For example, you can attend the Canberra Nara Candle Festival, a celebration that has been taking place every October since 1999 and aims to bring together Japanese and Australian arts and crafts, such as lantern making and origami. Also, you can join the Canberra Japanese Club, an institution that, since 2016, has been promoting good relations between Australia and Japan by organising cultural events and workshops. For example, they hold an annual dinner for members of the club to get to know each other and celebrate Japanese culture. And if you are interested in woodworking, why not join the Japanese Tray Making workshop? It is taught by a Japanese native speaker, so a knowledge of the language will come in handy!
For Social: If you are looking to socialise with others who are also interested in the Japanese language and culture, you can join the Canberra Japanese Language & Culture Meetup. This is a group for people with an interest in Japanese to get together and practise their skills. They aim to create opportunities for speaking in Japanese while having fun at least once a month. And why not invite your new friends after the meeting to have a traditional Japanese meal? You can go to Lilotang, a sushi restaurant on Burbury Road whose walls feature many references to Japanese pop culture. The menu includes an array of delicious dishes, such as wagyu okonomiyaki, roasted uami vegetables and more! The menu is written in English and in Japanese, and we are sure you will be able to read both versions after taking some lessons with us!
Starting Japanese with us is very simple. Just get in touch and we will arrange for a native Japanese teacher to go to your home or office. If those options do not suit you, you can meet at a public place, such as the National Library of Australia on Parkes Pl W, at Coffee Lab on Narellan Place, or Greenhouse Coffee & Food Co on Centre London Circuit. Just let us know and we will be there!
If you want to take a Japanese course but are not based in Canberra itself, do still contact us. We have teachers available in Queanbeyan, Murrumbateman, Belconnen and Wee Jasper.
So, are you ready? Let’s go, 行こう(Yukō)! If you have studied Japanese before, you can take one of our free online level tests here to find out your current ability and we will tailor our language packages to suit your skills.

Start LearningOur general one-on-one courses in Canberra will help students improve their Japanese level quickly and efficiently, whatever their needs. One of the most exciting aspects of our courses is that they are developed entirely around the needs of the students. The fact that we offer our Japanese classes on a One-on-One basis means that you can learn the words and phrases you need in a comfortable and relaxed environment.
Our Japanese courses in Canberra are taught on a one-on-one basis and will help you improve your business communication skills immensely. No matter what level you begin at we will soon have you dealing with business introductions comfortably before moving onto other matters. Beginner level students can expect to finish the course with basic telephone Japanese and email skills, as well as a level of survival Japanese, granting them the ability to work in a country where Japanese is the native tongue.
Our Japanese courses are also available for small groups studying together (Two-to-One Japanese Course or In-Company Small Group Japanese Course). All participants must have the same language needs, be able to study at the same time at the same place and be at the same level. All participants should be booked at the same time. Language Trainers suggest that you do not look for classes with more than 8 students at one time. However, an In-Company Taster Japanese Course can contain a maximum of 12 people.
