Auckland, the capital of New Zealand, is one of the most multicultural cities in the country, according to The Guardian in 2017. One of the most populous migrant communities living in Auckland is that of the Koreans, which according to the 2013 census, has increased significantly since 2006. Today, more than 20,000 Korean speakers are living in the city, and most of them are monolingual speakers. So, if you are looking to connect with this rapidly growing community and would like to know more about their fascinating culture and Korean-language career opportunities, then studying the language is a smart move. Just reach out to us at Language Trainers and we will start preparing a tailor-made course that suits your needs, requirements and learning preferences.

Why Study Korean in Auckland

Learn Korean for Work: New Zealand and Korea have complementary economies and are natural trading partners. In fact, New Zealand and Korea have a Free Trade Agreement, signed in 2015, which delivers significant commercial benefits to Auckland’s exporters. Thus, New Zealand exports the primary products Korea needs (like dairy, beef and lamb) and Korea exports the manufactured goods in demand in New Zealand (such as plastics and organic chemicals). With a total trade that amounted to $4.8 billion in March 2021, it is only natural that local companies are looking to hire bilingual employees to communicate with their partners abroad. Some businesses always looking for Korean speakers are ASB Bank, Pakuranga Heights and Sitel. Start learning Korean today and you will stand out when applying for these jobs, especially if you are competing with candidates who only speak English.

Learn Korean for Culture: If you are not looking for a new job but would like to experience the Korean culture instead, you will find many opportunities for doing so around Auckland. You can attend the many events organised by the Korea-New Zealand Cultural Association, an institution that aims to show the best of the traditional Korean culture to New Zealand. To achieve this goal, they organise concerts, photo exhibitions and book clubs on a monthly basis. For example, you can take part in the annual Korean day that takes place every January: enjoy beautiful fireworks, talk to successful business owners and watch amazing performances by Korean artists. Also, do not miss the K-Fest NZ, organised since 2016. This is a free-entry festival where you can taste delicious traditional food, participate in games and enjoy cultural activities, such as a Korean Tea Ceremony. Enhance these experiences with a deep knowledge of Korean!

Learn Korean for Social: Learning Korean in Auckland will also help you make new international friends around the city. For example, you can join the Korean Culture and Language Meetup, a language exchange group established with the purpose of gathering together all the lovers of the Korean language and culture in Auckland. Another group you can join is the Korean and Japanese Dining Out, a group of friends that get together to eat delicious Korean food while speaking in Korean and having a good time. Take advantage of this opportunity to practise what you learn in your lessons with us at Language Trainers while getting to know others who love the language as much as you do!
