Portuguese in Auckland
Auckland is known for its large multicultural population, with significant immigration arriving from Asia and Europe. Portuguese people, in particular, were among the first immigrants to arrive and settle in New Zealand throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, around 1,000 Portuguese travellers visit New Zealand each year and many of them make Auckland their home. Also, the community of Brazilians living in Auckland is substantial, with more than 2,000 people claiming Brazilian heritage, as recorded by the 2013 census. This collective has a huge cultural influence on the city, as seen in the many events that celebrate Brazilian and Portuguese culture, such as the annual Brazilian Day. Contact us at Language Trainers to start learning Portuguese today and enjoy these exciting and colourful celebrations like a true Brazilian without ever leaving Auckland! We specialise in preparing tailor-made courses, so you can gain the skills to make the most of these cultural activities while studying at your convenience.
Why Study Portuguese in Auckland
For Work: Learn Portuguese, one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and gain a competitive edge in the job market. Brazil, for example, is of growing importance to New Zealanders. The NZ government has signalled increased interest in developing relationships (both economic and educational) with Brazil and exports by the former to the latter amounted to over $30 million in 2018, especially in the fields of technology and agriculture (trading dairy, fruits, tobacco and coffee grains). This means that, if you are working in any of these fields, then learning Portuguese can give your career a boost as industry leaders will need bilingual speakers to aid international communication. Also, New Zealand has a friendly bilateral relationship with Portugal, which has been enhanced in recent years through shared peacekeeping work in Timor-Leste. New Zealand’s top imports and exports are footwear, heating appliances and refrigerators, wine and bed and table linen. Start learning Portuguese today to access more professional opportunities in the city of Auckland.
For Culture: In case you are not looking for a new job but simply want to experience the lively Brazilian and Portuguese cultures, you will be glad to know you will find plenty of opportunities for doing so around Auckland. If you love parties and celebrations, for example, you should not miss the annual Brazilian Carnival. This event has been bringing the colours, music, dance and great vibes of Brazil to the heart of Auckland since its inception in 2005. Enjoy the best of samba and other Brazilian music genres together with dance performances by beautiful axé dancers. You can also participate in the Brazilian Day Festival, a vibrant and fun event for all ages. There, you can find workshops, samba, zumba, forro and capoeira performances, food stalls, a huge carnival parade and live music. Sing along to the animated Brazilian tunes with the flawless pronunciation you acquire with Language Trainers and have the time of your life!
For Social: You can also learn Portuguese to connect with a growing group of people interested in practising foreign language skills, using Portuguese to talk about their experiences in New Zealand. For example, you can join the InterNations Space for the Portuguese in Auckland, a group that welcomes anyone with an interest in the language and culture of Portugal, regardless of their age or level of proficiency. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to put into practice everything you learn in your language lessons and improve your speaking and listening skills in a welcoming environment!
