Brisbane is a multicultural city that has welcomed many thousands of immigrants for more than a century. One of the biggest communities living in the city is that of the Portuguese, with more than 1,500 people claiming Portuguese ancestry, according to the 2011 census. With the arrival of a group of immigrants from Madeira in the ‘50s, these Portuguese began to form a a small fishing community. Today, they have integrated fully into Australian society and these Portuguese Australians form a very organised, self-conscious and active community in Brisbane. Taking a language course will help you connect with them on a whole new level, take advantage of professional opportunities available to bilingual speakers and understand the Luso and Brazilian cultures better than ever. Get in touch with us and let’s make it happen!

Why Study Portuguese in Brisbane

Learn Portuguese for Work: Learning an international language like Portuguese will give you highly employable communication skills. Australia and Brazil are two powerhouses in the southern hemisphere and Brazil is Australia’s largest trade partner in Latin America. This exciting business relationship is growing, and you can take advantage of professional opportunities in Brisbane by signing up for a Portuguese course! For example, companies like Haydes Trades & Labour or Solitaire Automotive are always looking for Portuguese speakers to add to their teams. Plus, you can network with other entrepreneurs by attending the New Chapter for Australian International Education & Brazil, organised by the Australia Brazil Chamber of Commerce. This event gathers speakers from Brazil who share their insights on how different sectors of the economy can develop and engage the Brazilian market. Don’t miss this chance to impress these Brazilian businesspeople with your Portuguese and establish a long and successful commercial partnership.

Learn Portuguese for Culture: If you are interested in learning more about the Brazilian culture you can take some samba or axé lessons at one of the several dance schools around Brisbane, as the Brazilian Soul Rio Rhythmics School. And if you are more into parties, you will be happy to know that this institution also hosts the annual Carnival Parade and Party Festival in Brisbane. Join them and wear an authentic Brazilian costume in this festival that features more than 150 performers and musicians. No dance experience required, just a sense of adventure and community spirit! And if you would like to know more about the Luso culture instead, join the Brisbane Portuguese Family Centre on Boundary Road, a community club where you can go and enjoy live bands, authentic Portuguese cuisine and more! Everyone is welcome, regardless of their ancestry. For example, every Friday they have a dinner-dance with authentic Portuguese food. On their site, they also feature news and relevant articles in Portuguese. Follow them and put your reading skills into practice!

Learn Portuguese for Social: If you are looking to make new friends and practise your Portuguese, you can join the InterNations community for Portuguese in Brisbane, a space where you can meet expats of Portuguese origin and also Australians who have an interest in learning more about their language and culture. And if the meeting leaves you hungry, why not go for delicious Brazilian food at a themed restaurant in Brisbane? The two best examples of Brazilian barbecue in the city are Navala Churrascaria at Eagle Street Square and Mundo Churrasco on McGregor Terrace. Portuguese cuisine has also made its way into mainstream Australian society, with the fast expansion and establishment of restaurant and fast food outlets, such as Nando's on Stanley Street and Oporto on Queen Street. Imagine ordering pasteis de nata using the Portuguese pronunciation you learn with Language Trainers!
