Call the ambos!

International students at the University of Queensland are learning Australian slang to help them in the working environment. Project Team Leader, Jacqueline Bond, says that these colloquialisms are being taught to first year pharmacy students because it is “vital that pharmacists have excellent communication skills when they enter the profession, to ensure that medicines are used safely and effectively. Unlike other generic language courses, students in our program develop their competence using scenarios that have been customised specifically for pharmacy, like talking to patients about medications for coughs and colds.”

Examples used include “I’m crook,” “I’m right off my tucker,” and “someone’s been stung by a bluey.”
